What To Do After A Car Accident Checklist

Our experienced Toronto car accident lawyers help you recover compensation

Nobody expects to get into a car accident. So when you are involved in one, it can be a tremendous shock. You may not know what to do next, but there are steps you can take to protect your safety and your right to compensation. The experienced car accident lawyers at Smitiuch Injury Law are ready to help.

Since our founding in 2001, we’ve helped countless clients get the help they need after being injured in a car accident. We know how injuries suffered in a crash can impact your life. You may suffer physically, emotionally and financially. It’s important to have legal representation you can trust.

Below are steps you should take after you’ve been in a car accident – if you are able to do so.

Call for help.

Call 9-1-1, or have someone else call. Then wait for police and emergency services to arrive. The police will make sure everyone is safe. They will also gather information and fill out a report. This report can help you later on when you seek financial compensation.

Get medical attention.

You may only feel shaken up a little, and don’t feel that you need to be examined by a medical professional. Let them check you out anyway. You could have internal injuries but aren’t showing any symptoms. A medical professional can also document your injuries.

Take photos.

Use your phone or a digital camera to take some photos of the accident scene. Be sure to capture the damage to both cars, as well as any nearby traffic signs or signals.

Exchange information.

Get the names and contact information of everyone who was involved in the accident. Write down addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, vehicle information (make, model and year), license plate numbers and insurance information. Also write down a description of the damage to all vehicles involved.

Write down what happened.

Take notes about the accident before your memory of what happened starts to fade. You can write down the time, date and location of the crash and give a description of how it happened. Write down any details you remember, such as whether the other driver appeared to be speeding or operating recklessly.

Report the accident to your insurance company.

You are required to report the accident within seven days, no matter who caused the accident. It is recommended that you notify the insurance company as soon as possible. Failing to notify the insurance company could put your accident benefits at risk.
